ORIGINS OF MUAY THAI

Muay Thai is the sport of Muay Boran, which is the martial art known as the "art of eight limbs", combining fists, shins, knees and elbows to fight the opponent.

During the 18th century during the wars between Burmese and Siam warriors, a famous fighter called Nai Khanomtom was capture by the Burmese. Nai Khanomtom was given the opportunity to fight for his freedom on a hand to hand contests where the famous fighters managed to knock out 10 consecutive fighters thanks to his boxing skills. Nai Khanomtom was allowed to return to Siam as a hero, where his fighting techniques became Siamese style boxing, later known as Muay Thai.

MARTIAL ART & SPORT

Muay Thai as well known as Thai Boxing is the sport of the martial art called Muay Boran. The sport is a simplified version of the martial art, that applies the most effective aspects of Muay Boran to make it highly effective in the ring. Kick Boxing t is often confused with Muay Thai, but both are different disciplines. Muay Thai is the most complete and effective of both including elbows and knee strikes, predominant round house power kicks and a different scoring system.

BASIC RULES

A MATCH: A basic Muay Thai contest has 5 rounds of 3 minutes each with a 2 minutes break between rounds. Judges score up to 10 points per round to each fighter. A fight ends on points or by knock out. By knock out either the referee or the doctor stop the fight or the losing fighter receives a 10 seconds interval count after a knock down. During a count, a fighter is not allowed to continue before the 8 count.

WHAT SCORES?: There are several factors that score along with striking including Muay Thai skill and style, aggression, counter-attack and overall dominance and power. Attitude is very important for judges and finishing strong prevails over a good start. Weak strikes or defense do not score.

SCORING SYSTEM: A draw round would be scored 10-10. The fighter winning a round will be scored 10  and the fighter losing a round will score 7 to 9 points depending on how decisively the winning fighter performed and the number of counts the winner scores on the opponent. A fighter scoring 2 counts against his/her opponent will score 10-7.

STRIKES & CLINCH: Fighters can score striking punches, kicks, knees and elbows. Clinching is a important part of Muay Thai. Hip projections and sweeps are not allowed, techniques have to end with a strike.
