Chaweng Lake Night Market
This night market is located across the road from Central Festival in Koh Samui, by Chaweng lake. It is a smaller market compared to the Fisherman Village market, but bigger than the one at the back of Central Festival ( we are referring to the outdoor market and not the food court stalls at the back of Central Festival). Also, here you will find more food options compared to the one across the road, at Central Festival, where we noticed many more dessert options. So maybe a good plan involves going for food at The Chaweng Lake market and crossing the road at the back of Central Festival market for dessert, drinks and live entertainment. (We went on a Thursday evening and there was a live guitar singer).
The food quality was great during our visit. The prices were standard, offering a variety of local dishes like sushi, traditional Thai food, insects, the fresh juices and the usual market souvenirs. Additionally, there is some entertainment, and parking can be found at Central Festival or behind the market by the lake. There are seating areas at the sides and entrance of the market. We had no problem getting a table and we were not asked to buy any cocktails or beers in order to sit down , something that happens at Fisherman’s Village night market.
It’s worth noting that caution is required when entering the market as motorbikes tend to park on the pedestrian side. It can be hazardous, especially for children, so it’s advised to supervise them closely and avoid letting them roam freely with motorbikes moving around.
The market operates between 4.30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. During our visit, we tried a fried potato , a pad Thai and a papaya salad which were of good quality and portion size. (60 baht each)
Overall, it’s a good place to enjoy a meal and to spend an evening in Koh Samui.
The positive aspects include a good food experience, excellent central location just in front of Central Festival, ideal for a night out in Chaweng after dinner at affordable prices. The location is convenient with plenty of easy parking available, and it’s quieter than the bustling Fisherman Village, making it perfect for those seeking a more relaxed environment.
In terms of drawbacks, compared to Fisherman Village, Chaweng Lake market is much smaller with fewer entertainment options. There are risks associated with crossing the road between Central Festival and the market, particularly with children. Inside the market, the presence of motorbikes on pedestrian paths can pose a danger, especially to children.
In conclusion, it was a positive experience best suited for those looking to experience a night market on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays around Chaweng, without having to take a taxi to go to Fisherman’s Village.
