Nathon Pier
Nathon Pier is often the first port of call for many travellers who visit the captivating tropical island of Koh Samui. It serves as the main arrival and departure point for boats, carrying cars and passengers, traveling between the island and mainland Thailand, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. Visit this working harbour for a snapshot glimpse of the beaches and jungle-covered hills that characterize the island’s stunning natural beauty.
Nathon Pier, as a key transportation hub in Koh Samui, offers a range of facilities and services for travelers. It boasts ferry services to neighboring islands, including Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and ticket offices for various transport providers. There are also several restaurants and food stalls where you can taste the flavors of authentic Thai cuisine. For those last-minute purchases or gifts, there are numerous shops selling a wide array of items, from local crafts to everyday essentials.
Step off your ferry and immediately feel the island’s charm. Peer down at the glistening water of the Gulf of Thailand and gaze up at the rolling, forest-covered hills. Watch as workers load and unload goods bound for the resorts’ bars, restaurants and hotels. A collection of colourful fishing trawlers moor in the harbour as local fishermen clean their catch of the day.
Nathon Pier sits on the northwest coast of Nathon Town, the island’s administrative center. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Samui Airport and 50 minutes from Chaweng, the island’s liveliest beach resorts. Taxis line up at the entrance to the pier waiting to whisk travellers off to their hotels. Look for car and scooter rental companies here.
Just a short walk from the pier is Nathon Town itself. Its main street is lined with bank branches, bakeries, hotels, internet cafés and travel agents. Pick up cheap beachwear items and backpacker-styled clothing at the handful of shops. Poke around the traditional wooden Chinese shophouses, which sell everything from amulets and jewellery to herbs and spices.
Nathon Pier is a short distance from several pristine beaches. On its doorstep is Nathon Beach, a less-visited wide stretch of golden sand framed by excellent seafood restaurants. About 4 miles (6 kilometers) to the south is Lipa Noi Beach, with its fine sand, shallow water, spas and beachfront bungalows. Travel further south to Taling Ngam, where the crystal clear water and unspoiled coral are perfect for snorkelling adventures.
The pier also provides transport links to other parts of Koh Samui. A taxi or a Songthaew (a local shared taxi) can easily get you to key areas on the island:
- Chaweng Beach: Known for its stunning white sand and vibrant nightlife, Chaweng Beach is approximately a 40-minute drive from Nathon Pier.
- Bophut: Famous for its charming Fisherman’s Village, Bophut is about a 30-minute drive from the pier.
- Koh Samui Airport: To reach the airport, located near Bophut, expect a journey of about 30 to 35 minutes.
- Lamai: Another popular beach area with a more relaxed atmosphere than Chaweng, Lamai is around a 45-50 minute drive from Nathon Pier
Please note that travel times can vary depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. To ensure a smooth journey, it’s recommended to plan your travel in advance and consider possible delays.
